Goldman Sachs Sets Up Renminbi Private Equity Fund

Goldman Sachs is making a big step into China by forming a renminbi-denominated private equity fund.  The private equity fund will be established with the cooperation of the Beijing city government.  Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, which is due to set up its own Chinese currency-denominated fund, trail private equity firms that have already made the leap into China.  Private equity giants TPG, Carlyle Group and Blackstone Group have set up funds focused in China.
The two Wall Street giants are following in the footsteps of private equity groups such as Carlyle, Blackstone and TPG, which have already set up renminbi-denominated funds in the country.
They will also face intense competition from a growing number of homegrown Chinese funds that have sprung up as a result of government policies aimed at encouraging domestic private equity funds and investment.
“There have literally been hundreds of domestic Chinese funds established in the last couple of years,” said Ying White, partner at Akin, Gump law firm in Beijing.
Goldman Sachs aims to raise up to Rmb5bn ($769m) for the “growth capital” fund, which it will manage and invest in state-owned enterprise restructuring, buy-outs, and outbound investments, according to people familiar with the matter.

Private Equity Hospitals

Private Equity Funds are Changing the Face of Hospitals

After private equity firms made two big-time deals last year to buy non-profit hospitals, buyout shops continue to be active in the hospital business.  This year was no different than last with the initial public offering of HCA marking the biggest private equity-backed IPO in history raising $3.9 billion.  I came across a great article on the expected rise in big hospital-related private equity deals.
Private equity funds appear to be in acquisition mode.. Seattle-based Pitchbook reported in its annual Private Equity Fund Breakdown that "one of the more notable trends that developed during the year was an increase in appetite for larger deals, which was driven by the increased availability of leverage."

These funds are developing a strong interest in the healthcare sector, including hospitals. A Pepperdine University poll at the end of last year found that 11 percent of private equity executives polled said they planned to invest in heathcare, up from 4.8 percent in summer 2010. "There will be aggregation of existing hospital companies, diversification into outpatient sectors and more jostling among companies to pick up larger positions in local markets," Scott Mackesy, a general partner with the private equity firm of Welsh Carson Anderson & Stowe, told the Wall Street Journal last year.

Conditions are ripe
Private equity firms are jumping into the hospital arena because of a growing need for their money. Hospital require funding to invest in IT and prepare for healthcare reform, but "traditional financing is harder to get," says Trey Crabb, president of Health Strategy Partners, in Nashville. "Banks pulled back from loans in the credit crunch. Now, the most favorable terms are only available to the larger healthcare companies."  Source
