Private Equity Interviews

Interview Request: Private Equity Managers & Professionals

I am looking to conduct several interviews with professionals currently working for private equity firms; this would be used as a resource to professionals enrolled in the Certified Private Equity Professional program.

I would like to talk about the experience of working in private equity, how private equity firms operate, what your firm's day-to-day operations are, how the financial crisis and poor economy impacted your firm and any other area of private equity that you feel would be beneficial to a professional enrolled in our program.   To learn more about the CPEP program visit this website.

Many of our participants work in private equity or expect to work in the industry within the next 12 months.  By participating in this interviewyou will be able to promote your private equity firm and gain access to a pool of talented professionals that you would not otherwise be able to reach.  If you are interested in this opportunity send me an email to Theo@PEBlogger.com

Kenan-Flagler Close 2nd Student-Run Private Equity Fund

Press Release: UNC Kenan-Flagler’s student-run Private Equity Fund Holds Final Close on Fund II

Chapel Hill, N.C. — The UNC Kenan-Flagler Private Equity Fund is pleased to announce the final close of its second student-run private equity fund, KFBSF Private Equity Fund II, L.P. (“Fund II”). Fund II continues Fund I’s dual mandate of providing an educational opportunity to students and providing real returns to its limited partners. The final close took place on October 15, 2010 with capital commitments of $3.1 million. Combined with the assets of Fund I, these students have in excess of $5 million under management. These two funds make direct investments in private companies alongside larger, well established private equity funds, including the Halifax Group, PNC Equity Fund, Hatteras Funds, Tryon Capital, Carrboro Capital, Plexus Capital, and SV Life Sciences, among others.

Fund II invests across a diversified range of private asset classes including traditional equity buyouts,
mezzanine debt, and venture capital. As a representative transaction, Fund II recently invested alongside PNC Equity Partners in the acquisition of Revolution, Inc., a leading provider of footwear, bodywear, and recital costumes through dance schools. Fund I’s capital has been fully committed and it has begun exiting its earlier investments, while Fund II is actively sourcing new investment opportunities.

Since raising Fund I (KFBSF Private Equity Fund I, L.P.) in 2007, the Fund has successfully completed fourteen investments across a wide range of industries by partnering with leading, top quartile private equity and venture capital firms. The Fund has exited one investment with a 3.7 x return of capital, and continues to monitor the performance of its remaining 13 portfolio companies and anticipates a number of potential exit opportunities in 2011.

The Fund remains one of the only student-run private equity funds in the country investing true limited
partner capital. The student managers guide and control all aspects of the fund’s lifecycle including
fundraising, deal generation, deal execution, and portfolio management and reporting. “As we exit the
fundraising cycle, we are excited to turn our attention to sourcing and executing the highest quality
transactions possible for our limited partners in Fund II,” said Trey Lambert, one of the firm’s Managing Directors. The 12 student managers include both MBA and BSBA students, under the direction of their faculty advisor, Dr. W. Clay Hamner, Frank Hawkins Kenan Professor of Private Equity, who himself is a seasoned private capital portfolio manager.

Based on this program, Kenan-Flagler has been ranked as one of the top 5 business school in private
equity alongside Harvard, Dartmouth, Wharton and the University of Chicago.

WSJ: "How Private Equity Got Its Groove Back"

Perhaps it is preemptive, but the Wall Street Journal has a description of the latest attempts by the large private equity firm to wow investors at annual meetings.  For example, TPG Capital's recent annual meeting impressed investors with the help of Fleetwood Mac.
First there was the tentative resurgence in deals late last year. Next there came the tsunami of secondary buyout volume in 2010.  More recently, it was the sudden re-appearance of dividend recapitalizations. Now we’ve seen one more sign that private equity is getting its mojo back: big name headliners at firm events.
Last month, TPG Capital wowed investors at its annual meeting with more than portfolio company data. The firm, which manages some $48 billion in assets across various fund families, brought in superstar band Fleetwood Mac as part of the extracurricular entertainment, according to two of the firm’s backers.
Meanwhile, New York-based New Mountain Capital, which held its annual meeting right before the mid-term elections, favored a more intellectual form of entertainment. The firm arranged a debate between former Arkansas Governor and Fox News host Mike Huckabee (like Dow Jones, Fox News is also owned by News Corp.) and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, according to people that attended the meeting. This isn’t the first time that New Mountain has brought in political figures with diverging views to duke it out at its annual investor meeting. Last year’s meeting featured a debate between Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff to President Bush, and James Carville, former campaign advisor to President Clinton. Source
